Protesting farmers face High Court criticism over tractor-trolley use on highways

In a stern admonition on Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court criticized protesting farmers for deploying tractor trolleys on highways, citing violations of the Motor Vehicles Act. The court underscored the need for farmers to balance their fundamental rights with constitutional duties, emphasizing that the use of tractor trolleys on highways is prohibited by law.

Quoting the Motor Vehicles Act, the court asserted, “You cannot use tractor trolleys on the highway. You are traveling from Amritsar to Delhi on trolleys. Everyone knows their fundamental rights, but some constitutional duties need to be followed.” Additionally, the court directed the Punjab government to ensure that large gatherings do not take place.
