Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the loss of life in the fire that started at a building in Goregaon, Mumbai on Friday. In addition, he announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 50,000 for the injured and Rs 2 lakh for each of the deceased person’s nearest of kin. The Jay Bhavani building caught fire at around 3 a.m. today, causing seven fatalities and more than 50 injuries.
“Saddened by the deaths caused by the Goregaon fire accident in Mumbai. To the families of the deceased, condolences. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. To help those affected, authorities are doing everything they can. Each deceased person’s next of kin would receive an ex-gratia payment from PMNRF of Rs. 2 lakh. PM Modi announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the injured would receive Rs. 50,000.
Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, also expressed his sorrow over the lives lost in the fire and made an announcement that the State government will give their families a financial contribution of Rs 5 lakh. According to Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, help is on the way from the BMC and Mumbai Police.
The most recent reports state that 51 people were saved and taken immediately to the Dr. RN Cooper Municipal General Hospital and Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College. According to reports, five of the total 51 injured victims are in critical condition. Four of the 35 patients who were being treated for injuries have been released.
The category 2 fire incident, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), was contained to the lower floors of the upper seven-story residential structure with stores on part of the ground floor. The fire also destroyed numerous automobiles and scrap metal.
The residents of the building were eventually rescued after being trapped on the top floors as a result of the fire, it added. Officials from the Mumbai fire brigade, police, and civic organization are on the scene carrying out rescue and firefighting operations.
