PGIMER Chandigarh enhances services with department renaming

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing its services and extending its reach, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has officially rebranded its Department of Surgical Gastroenterology. Henceforth, it will be recognized as the ‘Department of GI Surgery, HPB, and Liver Transplantation’. This pivotal name change received approval during a recent meeting of the governing body held last month.
The newly adopted title, “Department of GI Surgery, HPB, and Liver Transplantation,” serves a twofold purpose. Firstly, it provides patients with a clear understanding of the comprehensive range of services offered by the department. Previously, many individuals seeking HPB surgery and liver transplants found it challenging to ascertain the precise spectrum of services provided by the department. This name alteration serves as a beacon of clarity, dispelling any ambiguity.
The decision to rename the department was driven by the need to accurately represent the wide array of services it delivers, with a particular focus on hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) diseases and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. A significant portion of their referrals, research initiatives, and surgical procedures center around HPB diseases and GI surgery.
The proposal to change the department’s name underscores the fact that the previous nomenclature failed to adequately encapsulate the department’s scope of work. Both within and beyond the institute, there was a notable lack of understanding regarding the services falling under the umbrella of surgical gastroenterology. This rebranding endeavor aims to eliminate such confusion, simplifying the process for patients seeking essential services and streamlining referrals from other departments and external sources.
Additionally, the department has plans to introduce living-related liver transplants in the near future. The revised name not only bolsters clarity for patients in search of HPB surgery or liver transplantation services, but it also presents career advancement opportunities for the institute’s senior residents, who will have the chance to explore diverse employment prospects aligned with their expertise.
