Gopi, a resident of Jalandhar, had filed a plea for regular bail in the Punjab-Haryana High Court, citing charges under IPC sections 387, 389, 506, 509, and 120-B by Jalandhar police. The plea questioned the vagueness of the statement against Gopi regarding his role in seeking extortion.
The Punjab government stated that during the arrest, a pistol with a 3.15 bore and one cartridge, along with the extortion money, was recovered from the petitioner and co-accused Jaggu Bhagwanpuriya, members of the gang. Releasing the petitioner on bail could pose a threat to the complainant, involving intimidation and influence.
Considering all facts, the court remarked on the growing gang culture in Punjab, emphasizing the need to tackle it firmly to eliminate the culture promoting violence and drug abuse. The court could not turn a blind eye to contemporary social concerns, and the petitioner, given the severity of the crime, was not eligible for bail.
