A special court in Rawalpindi granted interim bail on Tuesday to Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a £190 million graft case. Bushra Bibi and Khan were accused of receiving financial assistance from a land developer to establish Al Qadir University.
Imran Khan has been in jail since last August following convictions in several cases ahead of February’s general election. However, a UN human rights working group declared on Monday that his imprisonment was arbitrary and violated international law.
“The special accountability court granted bail,” ARY News reported on X, referring to the interim bail. This development follows the Islamabad High Court’s decision two months ago to approve bail for Imran Khan in the same case.
Both Khan and Bushra Bibi deny any wrongdoing regarding the alleged receipt of financial help from a land developer in setting up Al Qadir University. Despite the bail, Bushra Bibi will remain in prison as she is also serving a sentence after her marriage to Khan was ruled unlawful.
Khan and his party claim that the charges are politically motivated to prevent his return to power. Recently, Pakistani courts have suspended Khan’s jail sentences in two cases related to the illegal acquisition and sale of state gifts and overturned his conviction for leaking state secrets. The former cricket superstar continues to fight dozens of other cases.
