Over 100 Samsung Union Employees Detained By Tamil Nadu Police During Protest March

The Tamil Nadu police detained over 100 Samsung union employees on Monday who had planned to march to the Kanchipuram Collector’s office with their demands. According to police officials, the employees were detained at Sri Sidheswarar Mahal.

For the past seven days, the Samsung Employees Union has been protesting for better wages and working conditions. Last Thursday, a union representative met with Tamil Nadu Labour Department Minister C V Ganeshan at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, but the talks did not reach a conclusion. Following this, the employees continued their protest near the Sunkuwarchatiram factory without entering Kanchipuram city.

The employees are also demanding the release of CITU leader E Muthukumar, who was detained by Kanchipuram police ahead of the planned march to the district collector’s office. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has claimed that the employees are being forcefully detained by the police.

CITU State President A Soundarajan met with Kanchipuram Collector Kalaiselvi and submitted a petition regarding the ongoing Samsung union protest. He stated, “We submitted a petition to the District Collector about the ongoing Samsung protest. The union was formed two months ago at the Samsung facility. The management has been making efforts to undermine the union and pressured employees to leave it.”

Soundarajan further added, “Samsung management harassed employees who refused to leave the union. In response to this attitude, the employees started an indefinite strike.” He emphasized the right to form a union, stating, “Forming a union is a right. The Collector said they would look into the issue. We will make efforts to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin. I also opposed the detention of the Samsung employee and the arrest of E Muthukumar, the CITU leader of Kanchipuram District.”
