On Tuesday, Indian wrestlers Nisha Dahiya and Priya won silver and bronze medals in their respective weight categories at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Nisha, who won bronze in the U23 world championships in the 65 kg category last year, competed in the Kazakh meet in the 68 kg category. According to Olympics.com, she began her day with a 10-10 win via criteria over the previous edition’s bronze medalist Delgermaa Enkhsaikhan of Mongolia in the quarterfinals, and then came back from behind to defeat Asian Games champion and Olympian Feng Zhou of China to advance to the gold medal match.
However, Ami Ishi, a highly regarded young Japanese talent and silver medalist at the 2022 World Championships, proved too strong for the Indian to overcome. Ishi won the match and took home the gold medal, while Nisha had to settle for silver.
Priya, competing in the women’s 76 kg category, defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hui Tsz Chang 2-1 to advance past the qualification stage. However, she was defeated in the quarterfinals by Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Kyzy. Following Kyzy’s advancement to the final, the 18-year-old Indian entered the repechage round.
