National Conference to engage in second round of talks with Congress on seat-sharing

National Conference (NC) is gearing up for a second round of discussions with the Congress party regarding seat-sharing arrangements in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This decision comes after the two parties failed to reach an understanding during the initial round of talks conducted last week, announced NC’s vice president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, Omar Abdullah stated, “There has been one round of discussion in New Delhi. There were certain proposals put forward by the Congress which required discussion within the NC party. However, one of the proposals has not found acceptance from the senior leadership of NC. So, we will go back. We will have a second round of discussion.”

Highlighting the significance of the discussions, Omar Abdullah emphasized that out of the six parliamentary seats in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, NC currently holds three seats. He noted that the ongoing talks primarily revolve around the remaining three seats – Jammu, Udhampur, and Ladakh – which are pivotal for the electoral strategy.

Expressing confidence in reaching a favorable agreement in the upcoming discussions, Omar Abdullah stated, “I am sure in the next round of discussion, we will have it (seat-sharing arrangement) concluded.”

Responding to queries regarding the delay in conducting assembly elections in the Union Territory, Omar Abdullah expressed optimism regarding the upcoming visit of the Election Commission of India to Jammu and Kashmir in March.

He expressed hope for positive developments, stating, “J-K has not had assembly elections since 2014. This is the tenth year now… I hope we get to hear some good news from that (visit).”

The ongoing deliberations between NC and Congress underscore the importance of strategic alliances in shaping the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, with both parties aiming to consolidate their positions and ensure effective representation for their respective constituents in the upcoming elections.
