Mumbai anticipates warmer week ahead with elevated pollution levels

Residents of Mumbai should brace themselves for an increase in temperatures, reaching around 31°C in the upcoming week. The city and its environs are expected to experience partially cloudy skies and smog due to an atmospheric temperature inversion trap, contributing to diminished air quality.
Although air quality had shown marginal improvement in recent days, it is projected to fall back into the ‘moderate’ category this week. Sunil Kamble, Director of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai, stated in an interview with mid-day, “The weather in Mumbai and the surrounding areas is anticipated to remain dry in the next few days, while North Maharashtra may experience cloudier conditions.”
Kamble further explained, “Daytime temperatures will persistently be slightly warm, which is characteristic for this time of the year. Typically, Mumbai witnesses a significant drop in temperature by the end of December and the beginning of January.”
Last Wednesday marked the first instance this season when the minimum temperature in Mumbai dipped below 20°C, recording 19.7°C at the IMD’s Santacruz observatory.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, a two to three-degree rise in temperature is expected over Maharashtra’s interiors for the next two days, with no significant change thereafter.
