Multinational conglomerate shows interest in adopting 5,000 Maha govt schools

A multinational conglomerate based in the city is considering adopting 5,000 government-run schools in the state, as announced by School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar on Saturday. The business group has conveyed its eagerness to take responsibility for at least one school in a school center, consisting of approximately 8-10 institutes, to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. If realized, this initiative will witness substantial investments by the business house to enhance infrastructure and provide educational facilities in these schools over the coming years.
Government Scheme:
This development follows the introduction of a scheme in Maharashtra, allowing philanthropists and businesses to adopt government schools for five or ten years by committing to spending between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 3 crore on these institutes.
During this period, the adopting organization can associate its name with the adopted schools, streamlining corporate social responsibility (CSR) donations towards educational causes. Minister Kesarkar emphasized the state’s potential for attracting private philanthropy, highlighting the annual spending by business houses on education and health. While acknowledging the limited state resources, he stated that district administration allocations are insufficient for school upgrades.
Adoption Program Details:
Under the scheme introduced in September, adopting organizations cannot make monetary donations but can provide goods and services, including basic amenities, electric appliances, educational resources, digital equipment, and healthcare facilities. The government clarified that donors cannot interfere in school management, and the donations will be unconditional, without creating obligations or ownership claims.
