Mullanpur’s first IPL match mired in controversy amid legal notice

In a turn of events shrouded in controversy, plans for International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur to host its debut Indian Premier League (IPL) match on March 23 have hit a roadblock. The stadium, slated to welcome cricketing giants for an electrifying clash, now faces uncertainty following a legal notice demanding a halt to all activities at the venue.
The demand notice, served on behalf of concerned stakeholders, including Nikhil Thamman, an environmental activist residing in Banur, District SAS Nagar, Mohali, by Advocate Suniana has raised significant concerns regarding the legality of ongoing construction activities at the stadium complex. Alleged violations of environmental regulations, particularly related to wildlife protection, have come under scrutiny.

The notice points to the absence of essential clearances from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), mandated by the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, for projects located within designated eco-sensitive zones. Amidst the mounting legal challenges, the fate of the inaugural IPL match at International Cricket Stadium hangs in the balance. While cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing the excitement of IPL cricket at the renowned venue, the legal dispute threatens to cast a pall over the event.

Authorities involved in the organization of the IPL match are facing mounting pressure to address the concerns raised in the demand notice.

With time running out before the scheduled match date, stakeholders are scrambling to find a resolution to the legal impasse.
