Manipur Schools Closed Till September 10 Amid Escalating Violence

Schools in Manipur will remain closed on September 9 and 10 due to escalating violence across the state. The Directorate of Education issued an order stating that all government, private, and central schools will stay shut during this period. This decision follows the unrest caused by a missile attack on September 7, which claimed one life.

The order directed all Zonal Education Officers to inform schools under their jurisdiction and take necessary measures. Schools were previously closed on September 7 to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic violence between the Meiteis, based in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills since May 2023. This conflict has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands displaced.

The recent surge in violence includes a missile attack on the residence of former Chief Minister M. Koireng in Moirang, killing a 70-year-old local resident, Rk. Rabei. The attack also injured three others, though their identities have not been disclosed. The armed group responsible for the attack remains unidentified, and an investigation is underway.

In addition to missile strikes, drone attacks have also contributed to the unrest. On September 5, bombs dropped from a drone in Senjam Chirang village, injuring three members of a family. The attacks forced many villagers to flee their homes and seek refuge in a nearby community hall.

The situation in Manipur remains tense as violence continues to escalate. Schools will remain closed for the immediate future, and authorities are working to address the growing security concerns.
