Manipur: Plea Moved By Professor Kham Khan Suan Housing’s Challenging Summons Over Statements Against Meitei’s

The Supreme Court in the case Kham Khan Suan Hausing v. The State Of Manipur And Ors observed wherein the plea is moved by Professor Kham Khan Suan Hausing’s challenging the summons which is issued against him by the Manipur Court. The Summons issued was against in connection with his alleged defamation of the Metei community during an interview with ‘The Wire.’
The bench comprising of Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia seek an urgent listing of the said matter.
The bench lead by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was supposed to her the said matter.
The bench in the case observed that the Professor Kham Khan Suan Hau sing, who serves as the Head of the Department for Political Science at the University of Hyderabad, found himself in legal trouble after he was issued a summons notice by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East, on 06.07.2023.
Therefore, Professor Kham Khan Suan stands accused of defaming the Metei community during an interview with journalist Karan Thapar on ‘The Wire.’ As a result, he is facing charges which are framed under section 153A, promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, or language), Section 200, knowingly declaring something false, Section 295(A), deliberate acts to outrage religious feeling, Section 298, verbally outraging religious feelings, Section 505(1), and Section 120B, criminal conspiracy of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
The court observed that the charges against Hau sing were filed by Manihar Moirangthem Singh, who being the Tribe Union, alleging that the professor made false statements to defame the Meitei community, leading to heightened communal enmity.
Accordingly, the court listed the matter to be next heard on July 31, 2023.
