​​Man arrested for filming women from lewd angles and sharing videos

Mumbai Police apprehended a 33-year-old man, Vaibhav Gajanan Angre, on January 19 for allegedly recording videos of women from indecent angles and disseminating them through his social media accounts and YouTube channel. Angre, a resident of Girgaon in South Mumbai, is accused of uploading approximately 400 such videos over the past two years. The illicit activity came to light when Angre filmed an on-duty woman police inspector and posted the footage on his YouTube channel. The suspect strategically positioned the camera to capture unsuspecting women in compromising angles, later editing and sharing the clips on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
A recent incident involved the filming of a 36-year-old woman police inspector managing traffic in South Mumbai. Once the victim became aware of the video being circulated on WhatsApp, she promptly lodged a complaint with the DB Marg police station. Additionally, a minister raised concerns with the police, prompting an investigation into the matter. The case has been registered under section 354(D) (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and section 67(A) of the Information Technology Act.
Mumbai Police formed a special team to track the suspect, ultimately locating him through his IP address and call records. Angre was arrested, and during the operation, two mobile phones, a SIM card, and evidence of eight different Gmail accounts were seized. The accused was presented before the court on Friday and has been remanded in police custody. Senior Police Inspector Vinay Ghorpade of DB Marg police station remarked, “We are trying to understand the motive behind the crime.” Investigators revealed that Angre believed posting such videos online would garner more followers on social media and YouTube.
