CM rebukes officer for not taking any action against attempts for communal riots in the district of BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asked East Midnapore Superintendent of Police Amarnath K to inform her directly if he found any difficulty in working under ‘political pressure’.
Addressing an administrative meeting at Netaji Indore Stadium, the chief minister cited the example of East Midnapore District Magistrate Purnendu Maji and advised the superintendent of police to learn from him.
East Midnapore is the district of BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. In July last year, Adhikari had claimed that he had the ‘call records’ of SP Amarnath K and had warned the IPS officer against acts which may lead to him being “posted in Anantnag or Baramulla in Kashmir”.
According to the Chief Minister, attempts are being made to provoke communal riots in the district for political purposes but the police are silent on the issue. Mamata told Amarnath: “I am getting complaints about your district. Attempts are being made to organise a riot in a planned manner. You did not take any action despite being warned by me for a long time. So, I intervened now.”
In reply, Amarnath said: “We have investigated and taken action. We have deployed additional forces.”
The chief minister interrupted and said: “Some political leaders fuel the rioters from behind. So, you have to take it seriously.”
Mamata then asked Amarnath: “Are you afraid to work there? Does the governor call you? Remember, you are working for the state government.”
The chief minister further told the SP: “I gave you posting in that district because you work well. But I am getting complaints. If you think you are under political pressure to work there, you can tell me directly.”
Commenting on the chief minister’s remark, state BJP president Sukanta Majumder said: “It is clear that the chief minister is putting pressure on the SP of East Midnapore to work for Trinamool. These officers work for the Bengal government and not any party. The Trinamool does not even pay their salaries. She (Mamata) wants to keep the officers under political pressure. Because of such acts, officers from other states do not want to come to work in West Bengal.”
