Kolkata rape-murder case: BJP accuses Mamata Banerjee of obstructing justice

On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of obstructing justice in the sexual assault and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia labeled Banerjee as a “destroyer,” claiming that her actions have led to the destruction of critical evidence needed for the case.
During a press conference, Bhatia criticized Banerjee, who oversees both the Home and Health Ministries, for her handling of the investigation. He alleged that Banerjee’s missteps have compromised the dignity of the victim, who was a doctor serving society, and have undermined the rule of law. Bhatia demanded Banerjee’s resignation, emphasizing that her actions obstruct justice in a case where the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita prescribes the death penalty. He questioned why Banerjee would allegedly be involved in destroying evidence crucial for securing a proper punishment for the accused.
Bhatia also condemned Banerjee for allegedly rewarding the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, instead of taking action against him. According to Bhatia, it was the principal’s responsibility to ensure the safety of the doctors at the hospital. Instead of facing repercussions, the principal was reportedly rewarded, which Bhatia claims demonstrates Banerjee’s disregard for the victim’s plight and constitutional responsibilities.
The incident in question occurred on August 9, when the postgraduate trainee doctor was reportedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. This heinous crime has sparked widespread protests and demonstrations across the country, with civil societies and medical professionals demanding justice and increased safety measures. Following the arrest of a civic volunteer by the Kolkata Police, there has been significant public outcry.
In response to concerns about the Kolkata Police’s handling of the investigation, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. The CBI has since utilized advanced investigative techniques, including 3D laser mapping of the crime scene and psychological evaluations of the primary suspect, to further their inquiry.
Moreover, the Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the case. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear the matter on August 20, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.
