Inmates make 43,000 phone calls, AIG to be suspended after senior official writes to Home Secretary

In a startling turn of events regarding the case involving three drug traffickers imprisoned in Ferozepur jail, a series of actions has been initiated by the police. The trio reportedly made a staggering 43,000 phone calls from inside the prison.
The Punjab police senior officials have taken significant steps by addressing a letter in this matter with the Home Secretary, calling for action against assistan inspector general, Lakbhir Singh for alleged negligence in duty and an inadequate investigation. Recommendations for his suspension and an internal departmental inquiry have been made in an official letter.
This development comes on the heels of Inspector Baldev Singh’s suspension last Thursday in connection to the case. Furthermore, AIG J. Alenchelian has been appointed as the new investigator to delve into the suspected collusion between high-ranking officials, drug traffickers, and prison authorities.
The issue of mobile phone smuggling into Punjab’s jails has escalated, with over 6,000 devices seized so far.
Despite the police employing advanced technology and diverse methods to curb this, the situation remains uncontrollable. Notably, nearly 600 mobile phones were confiscated from Ferozepur jail alone.
Investigations reveal that phones enter jails through two primary means: concealed within items or thrown in from outside. To counter these smuggling tactics, jails are implementing cutting-edge scanners and intensified checks to intercept items being smuggled into inmates’ bodies.
While approximately six jails have completed the implementation of these stringent measures, plans are underway to establish a robust police control room (PCR) outside these facilities. The entire process is slated for completion at the onset of the new year. Additionally, meticulous measures are being taken, including comprehensive record-keeping of individuals entering and departing from the jails, among other procedural enhancements.
