In a significant move as part of its anti-corruption drive, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) detained Advocate Gautam Majithia, currently serving as the Law Officer at Improvement Trust Amritsar, on allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe amounting to Rs 8 lakh.
The arrest comes in response to a complaint filed by Jatinder Singh, a resident of Partap Avenue, Amritsar, through the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. Singh accused the law officer, residing on Green Field, Majitha Road, Amritsar, of accepting Rs 8 lakh to facilitate the additional 20 per cent compensation release related to his land acquisition, ordered by the district court with a total compensation of Rs 20 lakh.
Providing additional details, the VB spokesperson mentioned that the complainant had documented his interactions with the advocate regarding the alleged bribe payment. This evidence, submitted to the VB, played a crucial role in supporting the case.Following a thorough investigation by the VB, Amritsar range, the accused law officer was arrested upon confirmation of his involvement in accepting the Rs 8 lakh bribe from the complainant. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered, and ongoing investigations aim to delve deeper into the matter.
