IMD Issues Orange Alert: Mumbai Braces for Torrential Rain, Flood Risk

Mumbai is bracing for a significant weather event as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for heavy to very heavy rainfall starting on September 25, 2024. The alert warns of severe rains that could lead to waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas of the city. The areas of Mulund, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Powai, and Andheri are expected to face the brunt of the stormy weather, with Mulund identified as the epicenter for this downpour.

The IMD has forecasted heavy rains throughout the week, with a mix of moderate and intense rainfall. Wednesday will see a significant increase in rain during the evening, escalating to very heavy rainfall by Thursday. By Friday, some isolated areas will continue to experience heavy showers, while the intensity is expected to ease by Saturday.

Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during the second half of the day on Wednesday when the rains are expected to strengthen. Corporate offices have been advised to consider work-from-home options or offer a half-day to their employees, given the potential disruption caused by the heavy downpour.

Scenes of severe waterlogging and disruptions are already emerging from Mulund and Bhandup, confirming the warnings of this weather system. Local reports suggest that LBS Road has already begun flooding, and residents should remain cautious as conditions worsen.

The IMD’s forecasts predict a prolonged wet spell due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is contributing to these storms. The agency has also issued red alerts for nearby regions like Pune and Raigad, where the conditions are expected to be even more severe. In Mumbai, residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and to take precautions as the city prepares for potentially hazardous flooding and thunderstorms.
