High-level committee formed by High Court convenes to tackle road safety challenges in Jammu division

The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, presided over a crucial meeting today of the Committee of Experts established by the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The committee’s primary objective is to investigate the causes behind road accidents occurring on the Ramban-Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway and the Mughal road.

The committee, comprising eminent members such as Prof G M Bhat, former Head of Department of Geology at Jammu University; Dr Ankit Khajuria, Assistant Professor from IIT Jammu; Er Mohinder Kumar, former Executive Engineer; and Major Gaurav Tewari from GREF, gathered to discuss strategies to address the growing concern of road safety in hilly terrains.

The experts on the committee will conduct on-site inspections of the specified roads to assess and identify the factors contributing to accidents in these challenging geographical areas.

During the meeting, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar underscored the significance of the committee’s fact-finding mission and the subsequent recommendations.

He emphasized that the insights provided by the committee should be translated into actionable points and immediate measures to prevent further loss of lives.
The Divisional Commissioner urged the committee members to deliver a comprehensive report promptly after their field visits, encompassing a thorough evaluation of the roads, identification of vulnerable sections, and a detailed assessment of the root causes behind the accidents.

This initiative by the High Court and the Divisional Commissioner reflects a proactive approach to enhance road safety measures, ultimately aiming to save precious lives on these critical stretches of highways in the Jammu division.
