HC seeks govt reply over naming country of origin on products sold on e-tail sites

The Delhi High Court has sought response from e-commerce companies Flipkart, Amazon and the Union Commerce Ministry on a petition seeking display of the country of origin of a product. The court will now hear the petition filed by lawyer Amit Shukla on 22 July, which seeks full implementation of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. The petition contends that Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 were amended in 2017, by adding a rule for e-commerce websites to publish names of country of origin of products on the website, but the same was never implemented by ecommerce companies. The petition cites the centre›s appeal to Indian citizens to prefer buying local goods to strengthen the national economy in the aftermath of the Galwan valley clash. It wants e-commerce companies to compulsorily display the name of the country of where products were manufactured, to ensure that the country doesn›t suffer.

Petition also points to the 23 June notification by Union Ministry of Commerce which ordered the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) to fill the Country of Origin category while registering all new products on the portal.
