The fate of the government led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot now hinges on the verdict of the Rajasthan High Court regarding the BSP MLAs. The court verdict has to come on 11 August. If the earlier order is upheld then proving majority will be a cakewalk for Gehlot.
The HC on Thursday disposed of the petitions of BJP MLA Madan Dilawar and directed that the single bench should conduct the hearing of the matter on 11 August and give verdict on the same day. The HC has at the same time asked the district judge to ensure that six BSP MLAs who joined the Congress get the notice by 8 August.
This is not the first case of BSP MLAs joining Congress and the case then going to the court. In 2008 too, the Congress had formed the government with the support of BSP and independents. Ashok Gehlot had become the chief minister then also.
Then in 2009, Gehlot managed to get BSP’s Giriraj Singh, Ramesh Meena, Ramkesh Murari Meena, Rajkumar Sharma and Rajendra Garha to merge in the Congress. The BSP then did not go to court. But the BJP MLA Jaswant Singh Yadav had challenged the merger decision in the court.
