G7 ministers’ meeting: India requests wealthy countries to reduce emissions

India stated during the G7 Ministers Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment in Japan’s Sapporo on Saturday that in order for developed countries to achieve the global goal of generating net zero emissions by the year 2050, they will need to step up their emission reduction efforts. According to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, this will give developing countries like India the chance to meet their citizens’ needs while also enhancing resilience to the negative effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and pollution. He made this statement during the plenary session of the G7 ministers’ meeting.

He also made clear that in order to effectively battle climate change and deal with environmental concerns, developing countries need to have access to proper implementation tools, funding, and technology.

“We do hope that developed countries will make good on their commitments on finance for combating climate change and provide for the same for dealing with the environmental degradation and biodiversity loss,” a statement quoting the minister said.

While attempts have been made to create legislative frameworks to address climate change, according to Yadav, it is now essential for governments all over the world to involve citizens and encourage greater public participation in the battle against climate change.
