The Jalandhar West by-election campaign has taken a contentious turn as former Jalandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku has issued a nearly six-page legal notice to current MP and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The notice demands an apology for what Rinku describes as false accusations made by Channi.
In a press conference, Rinku explained that his family has been dedicated to serving the West constituency since his father’s time. He emphasized his commitment to Jalandhar, whether as an MLA or MP. Rinku noted that after his recent defeat in the Lok Sabha election, he had congratulated Channi on his victory and spoke to him over the phone. However, Rinku expressed his dismay over Channi’s recent public accusations, which allege that Rinku is involved in running gambling operations in his area. Rinku also presented a video in which Channi makes these allegations.
Rinku recalled that during his time in Congress, Channi had praised him. He questioned what had changed, asking why Channi now speaks ill of him. “I was once hailed as a gem,” Rinku said, “and now there is an attempt to damage my reputation.” He has demanded that Channi either provide evidence to support his accusations or issue a public apology.
The legal notice adds a significant layer of drama to the Jalandhar West by-election, highlighting the intense and often personal nature of the political battles being waged.
