Delhi Weather Update: Heavy Rain Floods Roads, Car Submerged Under Flyover, Watch

Parts of Delhi-NCR experienced heavy rain for the second consecutive day today, bringing relief from the sweltering heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued showers throughout the day, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds with speeds ranging from 20-40 km/h over the next two hours.

The downpour, while providing much-needed respite from the heat, has also led to waterlogging in several parts of the national capital. Visuals shared by news agency ANI on social media platform X show inundated roads and long traffic jams in various areas of Delhi. Numerous residents have also posted images and videos of the waterlogged streets on their social media accounts.

On Thursday, heavy rain in Delhi brought the temperature down to 35.4 degrees Celsius, with the city recording 5.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM. However, the rainfall also caused significant traffic congestion and waterlogging. The city’s traffic police received numerous calls reporting waterlogged streets, traffic jams, and fallen trees, leading to inconvenience for commuters.

Delhi has been grappling with intense heat, having recorded nine heatwave days in June, a stark contrast to zero heatwave days in the same month in 2023 and 2022. The IMD announced that the monsoon is expected to arrive in Delhi within the next two to three days, creating favorable conditions for the advance of the southwest monsoon.

According to IMD data, the monsoon hit Delhi on June 26 last year, June 30 in 2022, July 13 in 2021, and June 25 in 2020. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is also predicted over Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka today.
