Cyclone Michaung’s Landfall Underway, Projected to Extend for Next Three Hours

The Indian Meteorological Department confirmed Cyclone ‘Michaung’ made landfall along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, with the severe cyclonic storm expected to continue for the next few hours. The cyclone has already wreaked havoc, with multiple fatalities, closed roads, and inundated subways, particularly in Chennai.

In assessing the aftermath, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that the rains caused by Cyclone Michaung exceeded those seen during the 2015 floods. Despite this, the damages have been relatively minor, owing to Chennai’s resilience and extensive desilting efforts.

Stalin emphasized the need for collective efforts, engaging employees, officials, and relief organizations to address the challenges posed by the disaster. The state government’s swift response involves setting up relief camps, operating kitchens, and ensuring the availability of essential food supplies for affected individuals.

The Chief Minister directed attention to critical aspects such as drainage restoration, relief camp accommodations, and road clearance. Over 5,000 workers from other districts have been mobilized to aid in recovery efforts, with the Chief Secretary and top officials monitoring operations at the Integrated Command and Control Center.

Amidst this crisis, Stalin urged unity among government bodies and relief organizations to mitigate the suffering caused by the calamity, emphasizing the necessity for collaborative action during these challenging times.
