CrowdStrike Update Leads to Major Microsoft Outage and Widespread Computer Crashes

CrowdStrike released a security update for its Falcon software at 04:09 UTC on July 19. This update was intended to improve protection for Windows systems but ended up causing many computers to crash and show the BSOD. The problem lasted until 05:27 UTC and affected systems that installed the update during this time.
The crash was linked to a file named “C-00000291-.sys,” which is part of Falcon’s security features. This file helps the software detect security threats. The update was supposed to handle new types of threats but instead caused system crashes.
CrowdStrike’s President & CEO, George Kurtz, said, “We are working to fix the issue caused by this update. It is not a cyberattack or security breach. We have identified the problem and released a fix. Users should check our support portal for updates and contact us through official channels.”
The outage has led experts to call for a review of cybersecurity practices. Sundareshwar K from PwC India described the incident as a rare and unexpected event, suggesting that businesses should improve their cybersecurity strategies.
Vishal Salvi from Quick Heal Technologies highlighted the importance of having strong defense measures, regular backups, and disaster recovery plans to prevent similar issues in the future.
CrowdStrike has addressed the problem and is working with affected users to resolve any remaining issues. They recommend checking their support portal for updates and using official channels for information.
This incident underscores the need for a careful balance between enhancing cybersecurity and ensuring system stability.
