Critical rain shortage puts rabi wheat crop at risk in North India, sparks food security

Six states and two Union Territories in North India are grappling with nearly 100% rain deficiency this January, accompanied by a substantial deficit in December. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reveals alarming figures, with Punjab 70% suffering rain deficiency, J&K on a 79% rain deficiency, Himachal Pradesh at 85%, Uttarakhand at 75%, and Haryana at 54%.

Weather experts, citing the IMD, attribute this unusual weather pattern to various factors, including global warming, Arctic Sea ice melting, and natural variability. This climatic anomaly not only affects rainfall and snowfall but also has repercussions for Himalayan glaciers and the vital water resources in the region.

The absence of active western disturbances and the prevalence of El Nino conditions further exacerbate concerns, particularly for the Rabi wheat crop. The dry soil conditions, coupled with the potential continuation of such weather patterns, raise serious apprehensions regarding food security. Government godowns are already grappling with a seven-year low in wheat stocks, posing significant challenges, especially considering the extended free foodgrain program for the impoverished.

As the ruling NDA government extends the free foodgrain initiative for 81.35 crore poor beneficiaries over the next five years, keeping an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the current weather outlook casts a shadow over these efforts. The situation remains precarious, with experts closely monitoring the potential impact on agriculture and food supplies amid the persisting climatic challenges.
