Congress Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu and former Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, alongside two other party leaders, found themselves in legal trouble as they were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a case filed against them for allegedly locking the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) office.
The arrest took place outside the police commissioner›s office, according to officials. Ludhiana Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal stated that the four leaders, named in the FIR for creating a disturbance outside the Ludhiana MC office, were taken into custody. Along with Bittu and Ashu, district Congress president Sanjay Talwar and former senior deputy mayor Sham Sunder Malhotra were also apprehended and subsequently produced in court, where they were sent to judicial custody.
Chahal added that other unidentified persons involved in the case would be arrested soon.
The incident dates back to February 27, when high drama unfolded outside the Zone A office of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. The Congress unit organized a protest that escalated into the storming of the office premises and the subsequent locking of its gate.
On February 29, a case was registered against Bittu, Ashu, Talwar, Malhotra, and 60 unidentified individuals based on the complaint filed by Amit Kumar, a watchman at the MC Zone A office. The charges include Sections 186 (voluntarily obstructing any public servant in the discharge of their public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of their duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
