Under the leadership of Gurvinder Singh Tarn Taran, the Computer Teachers’ Union of Punjab gathered in large numbers at the local grain market in Dhuri to protest against the Punjab government’s alleged neglect of their demands. The computer teachers, employed under contractual arrangements, have been raising their voice for their rights and benefits.
According to the union representatives, despite the 6th pay commission being applicable to all government employees in Punjab, computer teachers have been excluded from its purview. The union alleges that the Punjab government has not addressed their long-standing demands related to salary hikes, job security, and other departmental issues.
The agitation took a serious turn when protesters blocked the Ludhiana-Sangrur highway, causing traffic congestion. The union members expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s apathy towards their demands and vowed to intensify their protest if their concerns are not addressed promptly.
It is noteworthy that the Computer Teachers’ Union of Punjab has conducted several meetings with sub-committees, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and raised their demands in various forums. Despite these efforts, the Punjab government has allegedly not shown any inclination to meet the demands of computer teachers. The union is demanding that if the Punjab government does not grant the legitimate rights and demands of computer teachers, they should be included in the 6th pay commission, and the government should guarantee their rights through written assurances. The protesters argue that if the Punjab government continues to ignore the demands of computer teachers, they will escalate their protests, and the responsibility for any disruptions in the political functioning of the Punjab government will lie squarely with them.
