Delhi’s Ashram flyover had been closed to traffic since the start of this year for expansion was today inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. As a result the travel between Delhi and Noida should become less stressful. The key Delhi flyover, which will be closed for two months, will link Ashram to the Delhi-Noida Expressway. Over 14,000 vehicles are anticipated to benefit from the 1.5 km-long section during peak hours.
The flyover would reduce the distance between Noida and South Delhi by 25 minutes. The six-lane flyover is without signals for the Delhi-Noida route. For the time being, only light vehicles will be permitted on the flyover.
Experts say more flyovers will worsen traffic congestion in Delhi. “More roads mean more traffic. More flyovers mean more vehicular pollution,” a representative from the Central Road Research Institute said. Over 60% of Delhi’s air pollution is caused by vehicles. Experts question long-term impact of more flyovers.
The construction work of the flyover extension got underway in June 2020. The total cost of the project is Rs 128.25 crore, and the total length of the flyover including the ramp is 1,425 metres.
