CLEAR SKIES AND SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES PERSIST IN KASHMIR

Sub-zero temperatures are persisting with a cold wave in the entire Kashmir Valley even as the weatherman has predicted dry spells and clear skies for a few more days.

The harsh period of winter consisting of forty days known locally as Chillai Kalan will end on Saturday as the people hope that they will get some respite from Sunday expecting that the temperatures would be better at least during the day.

At present an intense cold wave has enveloped the entire Kashmir valley with Srinagar also witnessing a low night temperature from the past few days.

The Srinagar city recorded minus 5.6 degrees Celsius, during the previous night. In this current winter for most of the day’s temperatures have remained far below the normal. In this month of January on 14th, Srinagar recorded minus 8.4°C which was the chilliest one in more than 25 years. Earlier according to the MET department in 1991, Srinagar witnessed a low of minus 11.8°C.

Although Gulmarg used to be the coldest place now in the past few days Pahalgam health resort of South Kashmir, is leading in the minus temperatures. During the previous night the MET department said that Pahalgam witnessed minus 12.3°C.
