Chandigarh takes swift action to address rising dog bite cases

In response to the escalating cases of dog bites, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain has issued urgent directives to local authorities, emphasizing immediate and appropriate action to alleviate the growing menace. Citing recent incidents in Kharar and Zirakpur, Jain has instructed Executive Officers to adhere to the directives of the Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The Deputy Commissioner has mandated the initiation of an Animal Birth Control campaign and urged the preparation of sterilization proposals, coupled with the registration of pets among residents. Mrs. Navjot Kaur, MC Mohali Commissioner, reported that the Municipal Corporation has already sterilized 1174 dogs as part of the Animal Birth Control initiative, with these animals also receiving anti-rabies vaccinations.
To further curb the stray dog population, Jain has tasked Sub Divisional Magistrates with leading the Animal Birth Control drive in both urban and rural jurisdictions. Additionally, she has directed Executive Officers to diligently address recent dog bite cases, ensuring compliance with High Court directives on compensating victims. The High Court mandates financial assistance, with a minimum of Rs 10,000 per tooth mark and a minimum of Rs 20,000 per 0.2 cm of wound in cases where flesh has been pulled off the skin.
Recognizing the need for collaboration, Jain has enlisted the support of the Additional Chief Administrator of GMADA to extend the Animal Birth Control program into GMADA areas, coordinating with nearby Urban Local Bodies. Meanwhile, District Development and Panchayat Officer Amarinder Pal Singh Chauhan has been instructed to oversee program implementation in rural areas, maintaining close communication with local SDMs under Section 133. The comprehensive meeting, attended by key officials including ADC (G) Viraj Shyamakarn Tidke, SPs, SDMs, and various officers from Municipal Corporations and Development Blocks, underscores the urgency and coordinated efforts to address the surging challenges posed by dog bites in the region.
