Chandigarh Police arrests fugitive involved in decades-old crimes

Chandigarh’s PO and summons staff are continuously conducting special drives against individuals involved in heinous cases. Under this campaign, the team identified and arrested a criminal involved in a 35-year-old case. The accused, identified as Anand Kumar, a resident of village Haranpur Kalan, police station-Dadau, tehsil-Atroli, district Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended. He is implicated in cases of murder, kidnapping, and robbery. Anand Kumar had been evading arrest for 35 years by posing as a monk.

Hariom Sharma, Inspector/Incharge PO and Summons Staff, provided information about the arrest. He stated that Anand Kumar was arrested from Kashganj, North. Cases of murder, kidnapping, and robbery were registered against him at Police Station Sector 3.

On January 18, 1989, the accused had snatched jewelry from a woman at knifepoint in the jungle area of village Kaimbla, Manimajra. When she resisted, she was attacked, and her 11-year-old son, Omkar Singh, was kidnapped. Later, Omkar Singh’s body was found in the forest. Anand Kumar had fled to Aligarh after committing the crime and worked as a laborer in a lock factory. He then moved to Agra and later worked in the fruit/vegetable market in Panipat, Haryana.

He then assumed the identity of a saint (sadhu) in Jharkhand to evade capture, frequently changing his address. The team of PO and summon staff tracked him for a long time, ultimately arresting him after a thorough search in various locations, including Firozabad, Aligarh, Mainpuri, and Kashganj.
