Case registered against 2 police officers including IG, SIT submits report to HC

In a significant development, Punjab Police has filed a case against Punjab’s senior IPS officer Paramraj Singh Umranangal, and two other police officers, including IG, in connection with the alleged fake encounter case of Gurudaspur district resident Sukhpal Singh from Kala Afghan village.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Punjab Police, during its probe, found that the alleged encounter was fabricated, and the case was filed based on incorrect facts.After seeking legal advice, the SIT registered a new case under sections 166A, 167, 193, 195, 196, 200, 201, 203, 211, 218, 221, 420, and 120B IPC on October 21 at Singh Bhagwantpura police station in Ropar district. The case is filed against Paramraj Singh Umranangal, former SP (D) Ropar, and two other police officers, Jaspal Singh, former DSP Morinda, and ASI Gurdev Singh, former in-charge of Luthera Police Post (now deceased).
The investigation of the case is currently underway at the Ropar Police Headquarters. The primary allegations against the police involve fabricating false evidence. A formal and informal report on the case was submitted to the High Court on Friday by Gurpreet Dev, the head of SIT investigating the case.
