Rajasthan’s Congress government has made the location of organised criminal groups hiding in the state’s prisons apparent due to the lax law and order situation. The slogan of the police seems to have changed from being a source of trust for the general public and fear for criminals. Instead, it now appears that criminals have gained confidence, while fear has increased among the general public. In the rule of the Congress government in the state, the state’s prisons are becoming a haven for organised crime groups. Meanwhile, criminals from neighbouring states are also making Rajasthan’s jails their refuge.
Narayan Panchariya’s allegations
Narayan Panchariya, the convener of the BJP’s election management committee, stated that due to the negligence of the state government, the situation of the prison department is deteriorating, and new hideouts for generating criminal activity in the state’s correctional facilities are emerging. This is why reports of mobile phones and contraband items being found in prisons are becoming increasingly common.
27 inmates escaped from 4 prisons
Narayan Panchariya mentioned, “The state’s correctional facilities have seen the carelessness of department officials, and the alarming fact is that in the last two years, a total of 27 inmates have escaped from four jails in the state. Out of these, 16 inmates fled from Phalodi jail in the Chief Minister’s home district of Jodhpur. Twenty-five inmates have been re-arrested.
However, two inmates are still on the run. In the past two years alone, these jails have witnessed 159 inmates either dying due to internal fights, assaults by prison guards, or illnesses. Of these cases, the judicial investigation has been completed for 52 cases, while investigations into the remaining 107 deaths are pending.”
