BJP PROTESTS IN SINGUR FOR FARMERS AFTER 15 YEARS OF MAMATA’S STIR

In 2006, Singur was transformed into a protest site by Trinamool Congress (TMC) following a decision of the then Left government. After 15 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under the banner of Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha, held a protest against the Mamata-led TMC government.

The BJP is holding a three-day sit-in in Singur keeping in view the various demands of the farmers from 14 to 16 December. BJP state president Sukanta Majumder, BJP all-India vice-president Dilip Ghosh, state leader Rahul Sinha, and others took part in the protest on Tuesday.

However, it was alleged that the local BJP workers had to face police obstruction when they started building the stage on Sunday. Finally, the Hooghly district police gave conditional permission to the BJP in Singur. The condition is that the Durgapur Expressway will not be closed. It has also been said that no more than 50 to 60 people can be on the stage.

State Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari attacked the TMC government from Singur›s Dharna Mancha. Targeting the Mamata-led government, he said: “Mamata came to power demanding the rights of the farmers. It was already understood that she will not keep her word even after taking oath as the CM for the third time. After coming to power, the CM did not meet any task force in Nabanna. As a result, the agriculture department could not work. The black market of fertilisers could not be stopped. The condition of farmers is deplorable due to low prices of seeds and fertilisers.”
