Analysing Joraram Kumawat’s performance as MLA of Sumerpur constituency

In the politics of Rajasthan, the Sumerpur assembly seat is considered quite important. This seat is formed by the two municipalities, Sumerpur and Takhatgarh, along with parts of the Pali district. There have been 12 elections held on this seat from 1962 till now. Here, the public has supported various parties six times, while the lotus (BJP’s symbol) bloomed thrice. On the other hand, other parties secured victory three times.

Talking about the political history of the Sumerpur Vidhan Sabha seat, in 1962, Aldaram of the Congress won here. In 1967, the seat was won by Fulchand Bafna of the Swatantra Party. Following that, in the 1972 elections, Sajjan Singh of the Congress registered a victory. The 1977 assembly election was won by Vignan Modi of the Janata Party. In 1980, Gokul Chand of the Congress secured a win on this seat. In 1985, Bina Kak from the Congress emerged victorious here. In 1990, the BJP’s Gulab Singh won the election. In 1993 and 1998, Bina Kak, on the Congress ticket, achieved victory once again. In the 2003 Vidhan Sabha election, Madan Rathore of the BJP got his political fortune. Subsequently, in 2008, this seat went to the Congress, and Bina Kak won the election. In 2008 and 2013, Madan Rathore, on the BJP ticket, secured a win here. In 2018, BJP’s Joraram Kumawat won the election. Once again, the BJP has placed its bet on Joraram Kumawat in this constituency.

The total number of voters in this constituency is 302,222. Here, the Rajput, Devasi, Meena, and Sirevi communities have a significant influence. The number of Rajput voters is 35,000, Devasi 25,000, Meena 28,000, Sirevi 25,000, Rajpurohit 20,000, and Mali voters 15,000. Here, the Kumhar voters number 15,000, Ghanchi 20,000, Suthar 15,000, Vaishya 15,000, OBC 20,000, Ravana Rajput 10,000, Muslim 10,000, and SC voters number 25,000. Brahmin voters here amount to 8,000, playing a crucial role in the decision-making process.

Talking about the local issues in the Sumerpur Vidhan Sabha constituency, there are concerns about the Jawai Dam Rehabilitation Plan, issues related to electricity, water, and roads, demands to address the shortage of doctors in hospitals, and calls to fill the vacancies for teachers in schools.

The local MLA, Joraram Kumawat, says that he has brought about significant development in the area during his tenure. However, he is unhappy about the lack of a government that has hindered progress. On the other hand, the people in the area say that the MLA has been active in the field, but there has been a lack of accountability among government officials. They feel that due to the absence of a BJP government, their work has not been accomplished.

Before the elections, political parties and their candidates in the Vidhan Sabha constituency are making several promises and claims. Now, it remains to be seen whom the people in this area choose to bless in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly this time.
