AIMS Mohali commemorates International Autism awareness day program

A.I.M.S. Mohali Medical College along with Amity University observed International Autism Day, today, with a special program aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The event featured a symposium and panel discussion with esteemed guests, including local and international experts in the field of autism, alongside representatives from parent support groups.
The panel discussion provided a platform for a diverse range of perspectives on ASD. Experts shared their knowledge and experience on diagnosis, treatment options, and the importance of early intervention. Parent representatives offered valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of raising a child with autism, highlighting the need for continued support and inclusivity.

Dr Nidhi Malhotra  Associate Professor in Psychiatry AIMS Mohali  also organizing secretary of the conference informed about the importance of the day which is  celebrated world over to create awareness about the Autism . She informed that prevalence of Autism is approximately 1 in 100 children according to WHO. Rahul Gupta  IAS Additional Secretary Medical Education and Research Chandigarh was the Guest of honor for the occasion.
Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, Director Principal & Professor of Pediatrics AIMS Mohali, while welcoming the guests, emphasized the importance of breaking down stereotypes and fostering a more empathetic society.

Among the distinguished speakers  Dr. Prahbhjot Malhi,  Child Psychologist  has dedicated extensive efforts to understanding and addressing Autism. Dr. Malhi›s insights further enriched the discussions, offering perspectives garnered from years of research and clinical practice. “International Autism Day serves as a crucial reminder that individuals with ASD have unique strengths and talents,” said Dr. Prahbhjot Malhi. “By working together, we can create a more inclusive environment where everyone thrives.”

Dr Ravneet Kaur,Assistant Professor from the Zoology Department at Panjab University delivered a captivating presentation on the zebrafish model for autism. Her insightful talk explored the unique advantages of using zebrafish as a model organism to study Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr Ravneet research sheds light on the underlying biological mechanisms of autism, offering promising avenues for future therapeutic interventions. Her expertise in utilizing zebrafish as a tool for autism research highlights the interdisciplinary approach essential for understanding complex neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr. Gurpreet from Canada, representative of a parent group, delivered a comprehensive update on recent advances in Autism  and the various support systems available for the long-term rehabilitation of children with Autism. Dr. Gurpreet  shed light on the importance of International classification of Functioning, Disability and Health ( ICF ) to serve as a biopsychosocial model that can support different screening and diagnostic tools for autism while enabling the translation of diagnostic information into functioning.

Postgraduate students from A.I.M.S. Mohali further enriched the discussion by presenting their research on various aspects of autism, offering valuable insights to the audience.
