AIFF expressed grief over the death of former Indian skipper Samar Banerjee

Former Indian captain Samar ‘Badru’ Banerjee passed away on Saturday in Kolkata. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) condoled the death of the former Indian Skipper.

Badru Banerjee captained the National Team and finished the fourth-place in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Banerjee also played nine matches for Blue Tigers and secured three goals for the country.

“It is sad to hear the Badru-da, one of India’s greatest footballers, is no more. His contribution to Indian football will never be forgotten. I share the grief,” AIFF Acting General Secretary Sunando Dhar said.

“He will stay synonymous with the heart generation of Indian football. Badru-da, you will remain alive in our hearts. Badru da will be alive in his achievements. He was a legendary footballer and someone who has been an inspiration to so many generations. May he rest in peace,” Dhar said.

Meanwhile, in the Durand Cup matches in Imphal and Kolkata on Saturday a one-minute silence will be observed.

However, Banerjee had won various titles Five Calcutta Football League titles, three IFA Shields, three Durand Cups, one Rovers Cup, and also won the Santosh Trophy with Bengal in 1953.
