After SI Harjeet Singh, PGI restores severed hand of an 8-year-old girl

Hamirpur-based 8-year-old girl’s parents were in extreme dolorimetry state when they saw their daughters hand getting severed in chaff cutter. In between all this PGIMER launched a Replantation helpline number where such cases can be heard and suggested how and where the severed limb could be preserved and in how much time, one shall reach PGIMER for treatment.

12 April 2020, Patiala Grain market, a Nihang severed hand of an ASI named Harjit Singh. At that time, Social media got flooded with ASI Harjit Singh’s video, and his courage while picking his severed hand in his other hand was extolled. And then the whole nation celebrated that moment when PGIMER Chandigarh’s team of surgeons reimplanted his hand. Harjit Singh who is now an SI is quite happy with his recovery which is close to 50 percent, he can very well do most of the jobs with his affected hand. It could be a piece of national news for the common people but for PGIMER, the Plastic Surgery department, and teams involved in restoring severed limbs, it’s a regular exercise.

While marking the observance of National Plastic Surgery Day at PGIMER on Thursday, Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER along with Mr. Kumar Gaurav Dhawan, Deputy Director Administration, Prof. R.K. Sharma, Head, Deptt. of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sunil Gaba, Addl. Prof. and other faculty members, residents, nursing officers from the Deptt. of Plastic Surgery. and technical staff associated with the initiative.

Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER stated, “The basic intent of Replantation Helpline is to help streamline the flow of patients with such injuries so that the part can be stored properly and the patient can be provided the care at the earliest without losing precious time.”

Mr. Dinkar Gupta, DGP Punjab, joining the event virtually, expressed his gratitude to the Deptt. of Plastic Surgery for successfully replanting the chopped hand of the SI Harjit Singh of Punjab Police last year as he said, “One of the key enablers in case of successful replantation of the chapped hand of ASI Harjeet Singh was the timely reporting at PGIMER. In view of the same, my department will extend all the support for speedy transportation of amputated body parts to further facilitate the doctors and the patients.”
