A five-year-old boy was crushed to death in the lift of his building in Dharavi on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Huzaifa Sarfaraz Shaikh. According to the police, the gruesome incident took place in the Cozy Housing Society at Cross Road in Dharavi.
Huzaifa had boarded the lift with his sisters from the ground floor to go to his apartment on the fourth floor. When the lift reached the fourth floor, his sisters got out before him. However, as Huzaifa was closing the inner metal sliding door, the outer wooden door closed on him, trapping him in the gap in between the two. While he was knocking on the wooden door for help, the lift got called to an upper floor and the boy was crushed by the wall.
Huzaifa’s body was found in the lift shaft and locals informed his father, Sarfaraz, who is a tailor by profession. Huzaifa was rushed to the Sion hospital where he was declared dead.
Shahu Nagar police registered a case of accidental death and took the CCTV footage of the floors to find out what caused the incident. Since the footage showed no suspicious activity, an ADR was recorded.
“We appeal to citizens to not allow children to take the lift without any adult supervision. We also urge societies to hire a lift man to guard the lifts at all times, in a bid to avert any situations like this,” said Senior Inspector Gangawane.
