1988 Road rage case: Navjot Sidhu likely to be free bird tomorrow

Punjab Congress leader, Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was jailed for one year in a road rage incident in which a man was killed in 1988, will be set free tomorrow from Patiala jail, as per a tweet from his official account.

His lawyer, HPS Varma, confirmed that cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released tomorrow from Patiala jail.

Mr Varma went on to say that according to the Punjab Prison Rules, a convict with good behaviour is entitled to general remission.

The Supreme Court last year issued an order of one-year ‘imprisonment’ for Sidhu, who left as Punjab Congress chief after the party’s humiliating defeat in the state assembly election last year.

The court’s judgement came on a petition filed by the family of a man who died after a fight with Sidhu almost 35 years ago. The family demanded a strict punishment.

Sidhu had a brawl with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh, a Patiala resident, regarding the parking. He and his friend dragged the man from his vehicle and punched him. Later, he succumbed in the hospital.

The Supreme Court in 2018 asked Sidhu to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 for hitting a person. However, the court evaluated its own order and said it considered it “appropriate” to jail Mr Sidhu, saying “some aggravating culpability” must be attached if a person dies.
