1,800 PILLARS TO BE ERECTED ON HARYANA-U.P. BORDER AS STATE GOVERNMENTS AIM TO PREVENT FUTURE VIOLENT CLASHES

The governments of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have started to work on the erection of pillars in border areas as a move to try and prevent violent clashes in future.

A string of states across the country continues to witness tussle and violence with each other on border areas. It is pertinent to mention that a lot of farmers belonging to Haryana and UP lost their lives in violence over land and water disputes in their border area.

In wake of this, the governments of both states have started to work on the erection of pillars to define the border areas between both states. This step has been initiated to ensure that no violent clash takes place in future.

As many as six districts of the Haryana are adjoining to the UP border from Yamunanagar to the Palwal covering a stretch of at least 380 km. Excluding Yamunanagar, more than 1800 pillars will be erected in Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Faridabad and Palwal districts of the state. It is worth mentioning that as many as 102 villages of six districts falling on the Haryana-UP border continue to witness clashes over land and water issues of the Yamuna river.

Palwal emerges on the top as a maximum of 771 pillars will be erected in the villages of the districts near the border followed by Panipat and Sonipat with 527 and 347 pillars to be built. Although, it is not the first time pillars are being set up on the border area. Prior to this, pillars also had been set up after the border issue surfaced initially. To settle the border dispute between both states an act namely the Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (Alterations of Boundaries) act 1979 was notified by the Central government. In pursuance of the act, the pillars were erected between the boundaries of both states with the assistance of the Survey of India. Over some time, pillars have been washed away due to the flow of the Yamuna river. In wake of this, the work of erecting new pillars to define the border has been started after a long time.
