The State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have announced a partnership to establish a modern small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility near the Hatta Gas Field in the Vindhyan Basin, Madhya Pradesh. This initiative aims to elevate the energy landscape of the Vindhyan Basin, upgrading its status from Category II to Category I due to increased resource potential and economic significance, as stated by ONGC.

Using advanced technology, the Hatta LNG plant will produce LNG, known for its cleaner properties compared to traditional fossil fuels. The adoption of LNG is seen as a critical step in India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with its commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future.

The discovery at the Hatta Gas Field is the culmination of five decades of persistent exploration by ONGC. In line with this discovery, ONGC has submitted its Field Development Plan (FDP) to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) to effectively utilize the gas resources in the Hatta region.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on June 17 between ONGC and IOCL for the establishment of a technology demonstration small-scale LNG plant at Hatta, signifies a forward-looking approach to energy production. This partnership underscores both organizations’ dedication to a future where energy production aligns with environmental stewardship.

ONGC emphasized that this initiative not only focuses on energy production but also represents a significant stride towards achieving national goals of reducing carbon emissions and ensuring sustainable development.

The establishment of the LNG plant near the Hatta Gas Field strategically supports India’s broader objectives of energy security, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
