UK, Mauritius Reach Historic Deal On Diego Garcia Military Base

In a landmark agreement, the UK has decided to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos archipelago, including Diego Garcia, to Mauritius. This deal, announced after two years of negotiations, allows the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia to continue operations for 99 years. The decision resolves a long-standing territorial dispute, and India has welcomed the agreement, citing its commitment to decolonization and support for Mauritius.

Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia

The military base at Diego Garcia is critical for the US and UK, providing access to key regions like East Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. The base has played a crucial role in operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Gulf War. Its continuation ensures regional stability at a time when China is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean.

India’s Role in the Agreement

India, which has long supported Mauritius’s claim over the Chagos Islands, played a key behind-the-scenes role during the negotiations. The agreement, according to India’s External Affairs Ministry, strengthens maritime security in the Indian Ocean, a region of increasing strategic importance.

US and UK Praise the Deal

US President Joe Biden and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy hailed the agreement as a victory for diplomacy and international security. Biden emphasized the base’s vital role in maintaining regional stability, while Lammy called the deal “historic,” ensuring the long-term operation of the base in an “increasingly volatile world.”

A Step Forward for Global Security

The deal not only resolves the legal status of Diego Garcia but also secures continued cooperation between the US, UK, and Mauritius. It also reflects the commitment of these countries to safeguard security and prevent illegal migration routes from the Indian Ocean.

This agreement is expected to have lasting positive impacts on international relations and military cooperation, ensuring that Diego Garcia continues to be a critical strategic hub for decades to come.
