PM Modi calls India-Singapore ministerial roundtable ‘Path-breaking mechanism’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Singapore not only as a partner but as an inspiration for every developing nation. During his meeting with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, he hailed the roundtable between India and Singapore as a “path-breaking” initiative that will strengthen cooperation between the two nations.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi extended his congratulations to Lawrence Wong on his new role as Prime Minister, expressing confidence that Singapore will achieve even greater progress under Wong’s leadership. He emphasized, “Singapore is not just a partner country; it is an inspiration for every developing nation. We aim to create multiple Singapores within India, and I am pleased that we are working together toward this goal.”

Path-breaking Ministerial Roundtable

PM Modi highlighted the significance of the India-Singapore ministerial roundtable, particularly in areas such as digitalization, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. He remarked, “Our cooperation in sectors like skilling, digitalization, mobility, semiconductors, healthcare, sustainability, and cybersecurity has become the hallmark of this initiative.”

The meeting was attended by key Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Warm Welcome in Singapore

Earlier in the day, PM Modi was greeted with a ceremonial welcome at Singapore’s Parliament House. He was welcomed by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who hosted Modi warmly. PM Modi signed the visitors’ book at the Parliament House and held talks with ministers and delegates from both nations.

PM Modi’s visit to Singapore is expected to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries. During his stay, Modi will tour AEM Holdings Ltd’s semiconductor facility alongside Prime Minister Wong, following a lunch hosted by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He is also scheduled to meet Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Senior Minister Emeritus Goh Chok Tong before returning to New Delhi after a business meeting with CEOs.

PM Modi’s Enthusiasm for Strengthening Ties

Expressing his delight after meeting Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Modi shared his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Happy to have met my friend, PM Lawrence Wong. Had an excellent discussion on a wide range of issues. India cherishes its friendship with Singapore.”

Wong also posted a picture of their meeting and welcomed Modi for dinner at Istana, the official residence and office of Singapore’s president. He remarked, “Welcome PM Narendra Modi to Singapore! Delighted to catch up over a meal at the Istana before our official meetings tomorrow.”

Further Deepening India-Singapore Relations

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, PM Modi’s visit will further solidify India-Singapore relations. “Fortifying India-Singapore bonds of friendship. PM Narendra Modi was warmly hosted by PM Lawrence Wong at the iconic Sri Temasek in Singapore,” Jaiswal posted.

PM Modi also received a warm reception from the Indian community upon his arrival at Changi airport, where he was greeted by Singaporean Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugham. Modi was seen signing autographs and playing the dhol with members of the diaspora, sharing on social media, “Thank you, Singapore! The welcome was truly vibrant.”

Visit to Brunei

Prior to his visit to Singapore, PM Modi was in Brunei for an official visit. He engaged in extensive talks with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations. Modi also inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, and visited the historic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque as part of his trip.
