Former US President Barack Obama is set to begin campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, with a rally next week in Pittsburgh. The event marks the start of a campaign blitz aimed at rallying voters in critical swing states ahead of Election Day.
Obama, who delivered a strong speech in support of Harris at the Democratic National Convention in August, has been offering informal advice to her since she became the Democratic nominee. Harris assumed the position after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race following a lackluster debate performance against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In the final month of the campaign, Obama will focus on key battleground states, a senior Harris campaign official revealed on Friday. With Obama’s continued popularity among Democratic voters, his presence is expected to be a powerful motivator, especially in tight races where voter turnout will be crucial.
“President Obama understands the importance of this election and is fully committed to helping elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz, and Democrats nationwide,” said Eric Schultz, Obama’s senior advisor. Schultz emphasized that Obama’s objectives are to win the White House, maintain control of the US Senate, and regain the House of Representatives. As voting has already started, the campaign’s strategy now centers on persuading and mobilizing voters, particularly in states with tight contests that could come down to the wire.
Obama’s involvement in fundraising and campaign events has already brought in $76 million for the Harris campaign, his office confirmed. Last month, he headlined a $4 million fundraiser in Los Angeles and has been featured in multiple campaign ads supporting Harris.
Obama will officially kick off his efforts with a visit to Pittsburgh on Thursday. Both he and his wife, Michelle, endorsed Harris’ presidential bid earlier in July.
