Indian Embassy Rescues 47 Nationals Trapped in Golden Triangle Cyber-Scam Centres

In a significant operation, the Indian Embassy in Laos successfully rescued 47 Indian nationals trapped in cyber-scam centres within the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Bokeo Province, Laos, according to an official press release. The mission was coordinated with local authorities after Lao officials handed over 29 Indians during a crackdown on illegal activities in the region. An additional 18 individuals sought help directly from the Embassy.

The Golden Triangle SEZ, located near the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, is notorious for illegal activities, including cyber scams. To secure the release, Embassy officials traveled to Bokeo and arranged safe transport for the rescued citizens to Vientiane, where they were provided food and lodging. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by India’s Ambassador to Laos, Prashant Agrawal, who offered support and advice.

The Embassy has completed all necessary procedures for repatriating the rescued individuals. Of the 47 nationals, 30 have already returned to India or are in the process of doing so, while 17 await final travel arrangements.

Ambassador Agrawal reiterated the Embassy’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian citizens abroad. This rescue is part of a larger initiative, with the Embassy previously rescuing 635 Indian nationals from similar situations. The Embassy thanked Lao authorities for their cooperation and urged stronger action against those involved in such scams.

In response to the ongoing threat, the Embassy issued a strong advisory warning Indian nationals to be cautious of job offers in Laos, encouraging them to verify details and seek help if needed.
