In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India and Brunei have decided to give their relations the status of Enhanced Partnership. This move marks a new chapter in the bilateral ties between the two nations, which share deep historical and cultural connections.
PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Brunei’s royal family, including Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, who hosted a banquet in his honor. Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted the strong people-to-people relationships between the two nations.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of political relations between India and Brunei. Modi noted that the two nations have decided to focus on mutual cooperation in various areas, including agriculture, industry, pharma, health, technology, and cyber security.
The two leaders discussed possibilities of long-term cooperation in LNG, as well as strengthening cooperation in the space sector, including satellite development, remote sensing, and training. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in the defence sector, including defence industry training and capacity building.
Modi announced that direct flights between India and Brunei will start soon, boosting connectivity between the two nations. He also praised the contribution of the Indian community in Brunei and inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan.
